Do It Yourself: Produce Angel Eyes LED Headlight Rings
LED lights not only just look cool, but they are also green, cost-efficient, and go longer than several bulbs on the market today. Learn to make angel eye rings for your Sports car headlights using LED light bulbs.
Difficulty: Moderate. You'll use a soldering gun, drill and Makita tools or other power tools for this installation. Ask for help if this is the very first time you're working with these specialty tools.
Materials/Equipment: LED light bulbs (2x 3.6 v, 20mA), resistor (270 ohms), smaller blind rod (light weight aluminum replacement rod), 24-gauge stranded line, soldering iron and solder, Makita tools with cut-off wheel attachment, drill and drill bit #150, pliers for cutting off wires, reflective tape, translucent tape/painter's tape, aluminum foil, heat-shrink tube, jar cover (identical diameter as the ring), scissors, 12 V regulated power supply, oven.
Mold the Ring
First, assess the diameter of your lamps. We'll be needing a 4-inch diameter ring for this training course. After measuring, get a tiny blind rod. One mini rod will make two rings. For a 4" diameter headlight, the rod ought to be 12.5" long (use this method: Length = 3.14 times diameter). Include about 2 extra inches for handles. Cut the rod using Makita tool with a cut-off wheel attachment.
To maximize ring brightness, we need to make small cuts along the leveled (back) side of the band. These kinds of cuts will refract illumination toward the forefront for greater range of vision. Use the Dremel apparatus to make cuts 1.5 mm apart from others. Continue doing cuts until you connect with the other side of the cycle.
Drill the Hole
We're now able to attach the LED light bulbs. Drill a trap on each end of the rod to fit a LED light bulb inside. Employ drill bit #150, and set in place to 6000 RPM. To protect the rod from melting, remove the bit as you go to let it cool. Repeat the process until you come up with a LED light bulb-sized opening. The LED light bulb needs to tightly fit.
Take the LED light bulb which make the hole way more clear by putting on a small amount of clear nail polish inside of the hole. This lets more illumination to go through. Watch for the polish to dry up before re-inserting the LED bulb. Check out the bulb with a 12 V regulated power supply.
To catch the LED light and make it evident even during the day, use aluminum foil and reflective tape. Seal up the foil all around the uncut part of the ring and protect with heat shrinkable tubing. Heat the tubing in position. Find the ring on reflective tape and afterwards cut out. Strip and then glue the tape on the back side of the ring.
Wire the LED lights
Use a resistor (270 ohms). Bind the two LED light bulbs in a series connection by connecting the negative leg of one LED bulb securely to the positive leg of the other LED bulb. Take off one end of a 24-gauge twine and cover it around the negative leg of the first LED bulb. Fix into place using soldering gun. Strip the other end of the same cable and wrap it around the positive terminal of the second LED. Solder straight into place.
Slice a second wire and cover it all around the negative terminal of the next LED, and solder with each other. Bring the end of the second twine back to the other part of the ring. Tape the two electrical wires together on the flip side of the ring with painter's blue tape. Take out the LED bulb terminal legs. Now you have a single positive then single negative terminal on one side of the circle. Try it out having a power supply.
