Installing Home Theatre The Difficult Way
The allure of home theatre is strong and the end result potential pleasure. How hard can it be in these leading edge technology days to save the hassle, the time, the money and just bolt it all together yourself. After all , the iPhone age has made connecting all things electronic a breeze. I was under the impression the sales spiel and chose not to contact my local electrician to lend a professional hand. It all started off nicely. Enviably big flat screen TV? Check. Powerful speakers and amplifier that would have the neighbors moaning till morning? Check. Enough cables to wire up a little power station? Check.
With all my tech supplies in hand, all that was left to do was really put it all together. OK, I admit that I'm no tech guru, genius or professional electrician, but I am rather good when it comes to absorbing and following directions. Outfitted with a mound of instruction manuals and a fresh brew I got to work.
To make a long story down in size, I failed totally. What took place between starting on this mission and at last giving up is a little bit of a blur, but here goes.
The first issue was all that language! Somewhere between routing, anamorphic and matrix, I started to develop a little bit of a brain freeze. Not to mention the established fact that I could've played Scrabble with all of the encrypted acronyms like ADSL, THX and DHCP. Phew!
When I wrapped my head around a couple of these foreign terms (yes I admit I had to employ the search and Google more than a few times), it was onto making all of the different parts come together in one single working, congenial system. Well, my dreams of home theatre system glory were shattered once again when I realized how mismatched the varied hardware can be when you can't get to first base even with the language. It's as if the makers intentionally made it extraordinarily confused, I suspect just for their own weird entertainment. In short the TV is off doing its own thing, while the CD and Bluray player is going in the other direction, and meanwhile the satellite receiver is nowhere to be found. Each wants to be in control of the various functions, but the more that you try and shed light on your options, the further you spin into a deep, dark hole of a system overload.
As I sat there surrounded by loose wires, random elements and one or two remote controls, I realized that installing a home run theatre system isn't really a DIY sort of job. I only wish I had come to that conclusion earlier. Irrespective of how much I tell myself I am able to do things on my own, this is one case where I had to confess failure and called on the provider to get me someone to dig me out of this technical hole I had dug myself into. Help was then mercifully to hand. After hours of trying, a few not-so-nice words, and one or two cups of coffee I came to one easy conclusion: Some things truly are better left to the professionals.
