How can you tell if an adapter's got regulated output?
I'm hoping to replace my broken monitor power adapter (kettle lead going into a 12v 5a adapter) with this one I found in my cable box- 12v 800mA.
I don't have any electrical testing equipment.. Do you know the difference between 'a' and 'mA'? is one amps and the other milliamps? (is milliamps one hundredth on an amp?!)

5A means 5 amperes.
800mA means 800 milliamperes.
A milliampere is one thousandth of an ampere, so 800 of 'em is 0.8A.
(Notice my use of upper vs lower case letters.)
Your 800mA adapter will not be able to satisfactorily supply your monitor.
To check if a voltage adapter is regulated or not.....
Acquire a multimeter, analogue or digital - it doesn't matter which.
Measure the adapter's output voltage when it is unloaded, i.e. without anything connected to it.
Then connect a load, i.e. an item of electric or electronic equipment which needs that value of voltage and doesn't need more current than the adaptor is rated for. Then measure the voltage with that equipment running.
If the voltage is regulated the two voltage readings will be very close.
If they aren't - if the loaded reading is significantly (more than a volt or so) lower than the unloaded reading - then the voltage is not regulated.
